July 2025 – David Wilcox
July 2025 and David Wilcox entertained the society with his demonstration focusing on ballet dancers, without actually painting ballet dancers – paint the shadows and hey presto we have the dancers appear before our eyes!

I was born and educated in the Black Country, West Midlands. After studying painting and Art History at Bournville School of Art, I attended Wolverhampton College of Art, where I studied for my degree under the guidance of Brendan Neiland, the Photo-Realist painter.
I graduated in 1978 and followed with a Post Graduate certificate in Education with distinction at Birmingham College of Art.
After teaching for three years at high schools in Devon, I became a professional artist in 1983.
As a watercolourist, I use the English technique of many transparent washes, allowing only the white of the paper to create the highlights. By contrast, in my canvases, I use the Baroque technique of pulling the image out of a dark background for dramatic effect.
My repertoire encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including the dance, landscape, equestrian and figure studies.
I have been working on a series of paintings based on the productions of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Exploring aspects of dance with a greater emphasis on dynamic composition and colour.
My work is well represented in collections across the British Isles and has been included in exhibitions at Wolverhampton City Art Gallery, Sheffield City Art Gallery, Plymouth City Art Gallery and has been published in open and limited editions in Britain and New York
